Retailer sees profit in eye tests

Optical Revolution, which opened its first store in Colchester two years ago and a second store in Norwich earlier this year, has abandoned its ‘dispensing-only’ stance and is now offering eye tests.
Chairman Michael Kraftman, former deputy chairman of electrical retailer Tempo, told OPTICIAN that customer demand had led to the decision to introduce eye examinations.
‘We’ve had a good stream of business and a very happy customer base. But a lot of our customers, having bought from us once, are now having to have their eyes tested again. The demand [for eye tests] increased dramatically.’
Optical Revolution is currently using locum optometrists to carry out the eye tests three or four days per week.
‘We still continue to do a lot of business with prescriptions being brought in, but in addition we’re doing extra business in the traditional mode,’ said Kraftman.
