U.K.’s biggest water company signs pipe monitoring deal with Syrinix

Thames Water serves 15 million customers across London and beyond. Each day, it pumps nearly 700 gallons (2,600 million litres) of water through a network of aging pipes, some dating back a century or more.

In this crowded capital city, a water main burst creates hugely costly disruption. That’s why Thames Water uses Syrinix’s TrunkMinder to detect emerging leaks before they become big catastrophes.

The four-dimensional sensor arrays attach to the exterior of the pipe, monitoring pressure, flow and vibro-acoustics 24 hours a day. Syrinix’s intelligent algorithms then analyze that stream of data, flagging any potential problems.

Since 2011, Thames Water has installed Syrinix devices on its most critical pipelines. Thanks to the data TrunkMinder provides, the water utility has been able to spend less on emergency response, putting more resources into targeted repairs instead. And when a problem does arise, there’s no need to dig up an entire street to locate the leak: TrunkMinder can pinpoint it to within three feet (one metre).

In June, the water utility signed a three-year agreement to install additional TrunkMinder units as part of its ambitious goal to reduce leakage significantly by 2020.

“This tender win demonstrates the confidence that Thames Water has in our technology,” says Syrinix CEO, James Dunning. “A world-class utility was looking for a world-class solution and chose TrunkMinder.”
